Interesting problem. As the 50-Word Diva that I am, I can tell you that it either is or it isn't, you know? Your best bet is to set an artificial limit on yourself for the paragraph telling why you need the scholarship. And actually--aren't your need of the scholarship and the lack of publishing credits kind of the same thing? As in, "I'm hoping if I take this class I can get some publishing credits"? You do have the AC thing. I don't know if it counts for anything, but it should count for more than you know where, I would think. Hm. Interesting problem.
